Gastric ulcers are the result of erosion of the stomach lining due to a prolonged exposure to digestive acids the horse's stomach continuously secretes. Horses have evolved to be constantly grazing, whereas if they are stabled and fed high-concentrate diets with only limited access to forage, the acidity in the stomach increases, as does the risk of ulcers.
The clinical signs can be varied and subtle, but may include one or more of the symptoms;
• Poor Performance • Reduced Appetite • Weight Loss
• Poor condition, including dull coat • Behavioural Changes • Mild or Recurrent Colic
The only way to diagnose ulcers for certain is by the use of a gastroscope, a relatively simple, painless procedure in which a thin optical cable is passed into the horse’s stomach to check for ulceration.
Milbourn Equine are pleased to announce a series of Gastroscope clinics at Benenden and Ashford, offering our clients the opportunity for their horses to be gastroscoped at a much reduced rate.
What Is Gastroscopy?

Sweet itch and pinworm are two of the most common causes of itchy horses. Both of these conditions are seen commonly in equine practice and have a significant effect on the horses’ quality of life.
Elanco Companion Animal Health will be joining forces with the British Horse Society, The Blue Cross, The Horse Trust, Redwings Horse Sanctuary and World Horse Welfare to raise awareness of summer skin conditions, such as sweet itch, during Sweet Itch Awareness Month in March. The campaign will highlight the preventative measures that should be carried out to help alleviate sweet itch and the importance of management of the condition before the start of the midge season in the spring.
Firstly Andrea Bradley VN from Elanco animal health will introduce Cavalesse, a new product for the control of sweet itch and advise on the control of this condition.
Then one of our vets Nicky Kerbyson BVMS MRCVS will talk about the recent emergence of pinworm, and what we can do to control this problem.
Places are free, but seats are limited so please call the office on 01233500505 to confirm your place. A buffet will be provided.

Milbourn Equine Ltd were invited to support the Kent County Agricultural Society & Kent County Council in trying to encourage more young people into careers within the land based sector.

These skills were;
The feed back was really positive and we hope to support what will hopefully become an annual event. It was tremendous to highlight opportunities within the industry and encourage students to think seriously about making a career choice in the land based sector.
Roz Day-KCAS Education & Awards Chairman applauded our exhibit saying, ‘it created so much interest!”

Autumn Horse Health Evening
Part 2 - Friday 14th October 2011
Once again we were full to the seams with clients wanting to be part of yet another spellbinding talk on Gastric Ulcers and more!

Mr Richard Lester- Crime Prevention Officer was joined by Claire Norman they presented a fact filled report on the incidence of crime in relation to yards/horse/ trailers etc. They provided us with some very useful leaflets for clients to take away and consider their own security. For more details Facebook ‘East Kent Horse Watch’ or email diane.leslie@btinternet.com
Jo Gater-Willats from Merial, as promised, gave a gripping and thorough account on Gastric Ulcers, their prevalence and risks. There was time for a Q&A session too which was well received by all. Everyone was given a ‘goody bag’.

Finally...groups were given the opportunity to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice with a ‘hands on session’ facilitated by David McDonald. Clients of all ages were stunned and amazed at the internal organs on display; and for those more intrepid clients, once appropriately gloved up, David supervised a closer look which included handling the specimens and pointing out areas of particular interest...and would you believe an ulcer! It was incredible...
Lastly, for clients who had attended both part 1 & part 2 of the Autumn Health Talks, a certificate of attendance was presented!! Well done and thank you for supporting these fantastic evenings.
Once again refreshments, for those with strong stomachs, by ‘Directors Lunchbox’ 01233 613111
